Gynaecological Ultrasound Scan
The Gynaecological Ultrasound Examination
Gynaecological ultrasound scans are performed for a variety of reasons which include investigation of gynaecological problems, baseline assessment for fertility issues and screening for ovarian tumors.
A written referral for these scans is required to be provided by the treating doctor of each patient which includes the relevant clinical background information.
In order to obtain the clearest detail of the pelvis the usual recommendation is for a transvaginal scan to be performed whenever possible.
These are only performed with the full consent of each patient. If the option of a transvaginal scan is declined or not possible then a scan done through the abdominal approach is performed, although the amount of detail obtained is usually less.
For a transvaginal gynaecological scan we ask our patients to empty their bladders just before the scan, however for a transabdominal scan a reasonably full bladder is required.
We ask that you attend the appointment with a full bladder.
