Gynaecological Scans and Related Procedures
Scan Description | Applications |
Gynaecological ultrasound scansBoth transabdominal and high resolution transvaginal techniques are used. 3D imaging modes are available to enhance conventional scan techniques. Transvaginal imaging of the pelvis produces far superior detail of the gynaecological anatomy and is performed with the bladder empty |
Indications include: abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic pain, suspected pelvic mass, dysmenorrhoea, amenorrhea, suspected ectopic or early pregnancy complication and infertility. This modality is also useful in routine screening for pelvic pathology in women with a past or family history of ovarian neoplasm and assessing the endometrium in women on Tamoxifen therapy. |
Saline Instillation Sonohysterography (SIS)This ultrasound procedure uses instillation of normal saline fluid to act as an image enhancing agent for better visualization of the uterine cavity using transvaginal imaging |
Specific indications include cases where an endometrial pathology or other intracavity pathology such as a polyp is suspected and when hysteroscopy and curretage is contra-indicated. For women with regular menses these are best timed for days 4 – 10 of the cycle to avoid interfering with any possible pregnancy implantation |
